Live Life On Your Terms: With Carly Stephan

Have I mentioned how much I absolutely adore the Live Life On Your Terms series? Each week, I'm absolutely floored and inspired by incredible women who are rising up and making waves in their lives.

My gorgeous friends, it's time to introduce you to the incredible Carly Stephan, who is wildly passionate about braiding the earth, soul, spirit and cosmos into her work and creative expression. She recently left her full-time gig to dive into her coaching business full time where she helps women unleash their potent life force energy and live at their highest, light-filled potential in every moment.

Carly believes in claiming all of your light, all of your darkness and alchemising both in to the most divinely inspired creation the universe has come up with yet – you in your wholeness.

A modern-day mystic after my own heart.

Soak up Carly's incredible wisdom - a little soul nourishment at its finest.

Tell us more about you: who are you and what are you all about?

I’m a spiritual practice mentor and coach for women who want to live their highest potential and most exalted and juicy lives here on earth. I’m currently shifting my professional focus from being a full time international development practitioner for over a decade (working directly on community development projects ranging from women’s empowerment to climate change adaptation and local economic development), to launching my own soul business as a spiritual mentor for women - which for the last few years has been done in my spare time around my full time job.

What does living life on your own terms mean to you?

Tuning into my soul’s white hot truth. Learning how to speak its language and what its trying to lovingly tell me in any given moment - and then going and doing that. This is both a moment-by-moment practice, as well as what guides my medium and longer term goals, dreams and aspirations.

Share with us a personal challenge that you’ve had to overcome and what limiting beliefs you had to break down along the way.

I can use a current one for this! At the moment I’m shifting from my full time job and career in international development, which I’ve worked in and thoroughly enjoyed for over a decade - and I’m now shifting into owning my soul work full time, and launching a body of work which is birthing at the moment!

The limiting beliefs are: Who are you to do this? Do you have permission? Can you do actually do this? And the resistance is of course super strong around these terms.

But when you commit to the path of your soul and your highest truth, these limiting beliefs act as really useful signposts, pointing you in the direction you're most resisting.

So for me, I can see these signposts very clearly and rather than overcome them, I welcome them as signs I’m currently stepping into my highest potential and honouring my soul’s calling.

When life gets hectic and overwhelming, what do you do to feel more grounded and balanced?

I get centred and embodied. I drop into my heart space.

One way I do this it to go and earth myself. Mama earth is by far one of the most healing antioxidants on earth - I take myself to the beach, to the river, into the forest or just down to the park and put my bare feet on the earth or climb into the nook of a tree’s root system. Breathing into my belly and feeling nature clearing, activating and grounding me. Releasing what no longer serves me back into the earth.

This always leaves me feeling better, clearer and more balanced.

When it comes to creating change in your life, what does putting it into action look like for you? (And how do you handle when/ if resistance pops up?)

Resistance and fear come up for me ALL the time, and it’s definitely as I move closer to what my soul really wants to birth, as I mentioned above. Steven Pressfield writes about resistance beautifully in his (GREAT) book, The War of Art.

For me, breaking through resistance involves breaking down a task into bite-sized chunks and creating a sacred container within which to earth my creations. It differs for different things, but as an example, a mammoth task such as writing my book, looks like this: I commit to 100 words a day. Sometimes it ends up being more, but sometimes it is just 100. It may not seem like much, but at the end of one month I’ll be between 3000-5000 words ahead on my book, even when I’m in full resistance mode.

I create chunks and chip away at things I feel resistance around. And also make sure I do those tasks in the morning, when my head is clearest!

What are the top two nuggets of wisdom or advice you would give to someone?

Make the journey from your head to your heart. Tune inwards and begin to ‘feel’ into what’s right for you and your life - a balance between your head and heart is fantastic.

YOU are your ultimate guru, no one else. Always run the words, teachings, suggestions or advice you receive through your own prism and see if it shines true for YOU, don’t just take it on because someone tells you to.

What is one quote that really resonates with you, or that you choose to live life by?

"GIVE IT. What you think you don’t have. What you have never had enough of. What you are envious of in others. Give it to yourself. Until you know it. Until it’s in you. Until it is you. Until you can’t think of anything else. Until you don’t think of it anymore.

Give it. Generously. Take it in wholeheartedly. Until it falls out your mouth. Hanging on every word. Give it to yourself. Make it your steady source of nourishment. Until it is the salt in your tears. Until it’s the echo of your laugh. Until it is your future. Until it is your past. Give it to yourself in response to what was always withheld. To what is still withheld. To what seems to refuse you.

Choose you. Let generosity be your best revenge. Don’t stop where their tracks did. Beyond their finish line is your starting point. This is your life. Your race to pace yourself through. Your journey to journey.

No one knows how it will end. No one save your stars. And your heart.

Immerse yourself in what you need. Bury yourself in its scent. Cover yourself in its light. Eat at its table. Sleep with its mistress. Refuse to be ashamed of your needs. You weren’t starving before you got here. You were born full.

Believe it. Until you are satiated again." - Chani Nicholas

I can’t go a day without… My love. And coffee.

Following the trail of my curiosities means… I am probably on a youtube video watching binge and should probably pull out before it’s midnight and I’m watching some insane “Cat’s do the darndest things” video.

When I feel fear… I’m generally getting close to birthing something important.

I feel joyful when… I’m laughing with my loved ones.

I’m most grateful for… The rising tide of divine feminine and divine masculine energy in our world. It’s breathtakingly beautiful to behold.
