Live Life On Your Terms: With Melyssa Griffin

Melyssa is a total powerhouse. It's no secret that I adore anybody who turns their passion and dreams into a booming business while completely embodying their true selves in everything that they do.

That's where Melyssa Griffin found herself just a few short years ago - feeling stuck in an unfulfilling job, her creativity stifled, and a massive desire to create her own dream job - that didn't feel like a job at all.

So, she did. Armed with unwavering passion and a generous heart, she's created a massive online community (with more than 40,000 subscribers!), delivers killer content that's crazy actionable, and continues to launch wildly successful e-courses all with one main focus: helping entrepreneurs build business they love, grow their audience, and increase their income.

What I love most about her? Her genuine, kind spirit. She's the kind of person you meet and instantly want to be best friends with - she's always got your back, is the best kind of biz-cheerleader, and this girl has a whole lotta heart. Not to mention a total love for reveling in our silly & quirky bits - and the spontaneous dance parties and sing-offs. I mean, honestly? If you haven't already headed over to her site and subsequently fallen in love with her, prepare yourself!

Tell us more about you: who are you and what are you all about? (Your story, your truth)

Yo! I'm Melyssa, an e-course creator, blogger, online community maker, and randomly-bursts-into-dance-in-my-living-room-er. I currently live in Los Angeles, though I started my business while living in Japan. My main goal is to help people who feel a little bit unhappy with where their career or life is at. Through online workshops, Facebook groups, e-courses, and a whole lot o' social media lovin', I provide aspiring entrepreneurs with the tools to turn their purpose into their reality. I also believe in being a kind, authentic person. I know that the more we allow ourselves to be "us," the more everyone around us feels like they can be "them." And isn't the world just better when we get to experience people for who they are deep down inside?

What does living life on your own terms mean to you?

For me, it means independence and not having to answer to anyone but myself. I'm stubborn (a Taurus by all accounts) and found myself in a lot of different jobs prior to creating my own. No matter where I worked, I felt like I was stifling my creativity and answering someone else's call rather than my own. Now, I love the freedom to organize and run my business in a way that feels good to me. I also love the opportunity to take days off when I need them, or to plan sporadic middle-of-the-week trips (I'm currently on a plane to New York!).

Share with us a personal challenge that you’ve had to overcome and what limiting beliefs you had to break down along the way.

I definitely had to deal with the fact that you'll never start your business at the top and that there will *always* be someone who's working harder or achieving more than you. This was especially evident when I started my business or at times when I was launching a new endeavor. It's easy to look around and feel like you're in last place or to worry that everyone else is more innovative or profitable than you.

But those thoughts never got me anywhere. And worse than that, I found that they ended up stifling my creativity and confidence (which set me further and further behind!). So, whenever I notice myself coming down with a case of Comparison-itis, I just unfollow that person everywhere. And amazingly, their content and success completely disappears from my realm of thought. I think we look at other people's achievements and can feel powerless. But we always have the power to decide what we consume and if it makes us feel good or crummy.

When life gets hectic and overwhelming, what do you do to feel more grounded and balanced?

Do you remember the movie, Inception? I don't - ha! But I do remember one concept they mentioned, which was the idea of a "totem." In the movie, if I remember correctly, totems are used to help you determine if you're in a dream or in reality.

I may not use them in the same way, but I have totems of my own, which remind me to be more mindful. My totems of choice are often either my dog or an insect, if I see one nearby. I love nature immensely, and seeing these pure creatures is such a stellar reminder to me that nothing (NOTHING!) I'm facing is really as important as it seems. I'm just a creature of the earth myself, like my dog, or that ladybug I saw on my window yesterday. Looking at them kind of gives me the feeling that I'd imagine an astronaut would feel when looking down at earth. A realization that nothing is as important as it seems and that everything you've ever felt, known, or loved is just a speck in a beautifully vast universe.

When it comes to creating change in your life, what does putting it into action look like for you? (And how do you handle when/ if resistance pops up?)

Hmm interesting! I tend to seek out change and I do it fairly spontaneously. I get bored with too many routines, so I enjoy newness. I'm an optimistic person, so when resistance arises, my mind usually jumps immediately to the best case scenario or to a possible solution. I really think that's one of the most important pieces to successful entrepreneurship: looking for solutions rather than problems.

What are the top two nuggets of wisdom or advice you would give to someone?

1. The person you are with your closest friends? (Yes, that silly, quirky, uninhibited person). Be that person with as many people as you possibly can. When we choose to be our most authentic selves, not only do we begin to feel more confident and seen, we also help to activate those same feelings in other people, too.

2. Remember, we all start at the beginning. When you look at others who may be ahead of you, remember that starting at zero and working our way up is a natural course that every successful person you know of had to take. Be grateful for the journey. It's what life is all about.

What is one quote that really resonates with you, or that you choose to live life by?

"In a sense, each of us is an island. In another sense, however, we are all one. For though islands appear separate, and may even be situated at great distances from one another, they are only extrusions of the same planet, earth." ― J. Donald Walters

RAPID FIRE Q's:

I can’t go a day without… almond milk lattes or green smoothies. Preferably both. ;)
Following the trail of my curiosities means… Living life the way nature intended me to.
When I feel fear… I remember my "totems" and realize that fear doesn't really matter. I also probably take a moment to tell my boyfriend, because I think there's value in talking about your emotions, struggles, and fears, too.
I feel joyful when… I'm spending time with people (and animals) I love.
I’m most grateful for… the opportunity to live out my dream and to help others do the same.
